This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first US Airmail flights – and USPS is celebrating the occasion with the release of a brand-new commemorative Airmail stamp! The stamp was printed intaglio in blue ink and pictures a Curtiss JN-4H "Jenny" biplane – the same planes early airmail pilots flew. The design is a throwback to the Airmail stamps of 100 years ago.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Airmail, the Smithsonian National Postal Museum also opened a new airmail exhibit. It's called "Postmen of the Skies," and will complement the permanent US airmail exhibit already in place.

100 years ago Congress authorized the Post Office Department to carry the mail by airplane. This ruling necessitated a new stamp – one of distinctive design and color.
